Elderbrook: The Producer Who Can Turn Accidents Into Tunes
EXCLUSIVE! The GRAMMY nominated multi-instrumentalist talks his unique approach to beat-making and more in our Brand New For 2018 spotlight...
One ridiculously talented guy, the singer/songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist, AKA Alexander Kotz, explains his musical journey has been as versatile as his skills in our exclusive interview…
Watch our exclusive Brand New For 2018 spotlight with Elderbrook here:
“I started in indie bands,” the ‘Cola’ hit maker revealed, “just with school friends and then that kind of turned into acoustic folk music. As I was recording the acoustic folk music I realised that you could do so much more with a computer. Over time it kind of morphed into completely electronic without the guitar.”
Sometimes it doesn’t even involve instruments at all…
“I just think it’s really important to experiment with sound and try and find the crazier sounds that other people just won’t have basically,” he continued. “Dropping ice into hot coffee makes a really nice crackling sound.
“In my song ‘Could’ you can hear me opening and closing a glasses case. I once also spilt a glass of water on my laptop but I was recording at the time so I did turn that into a really nice snare.”
This weekend Elderbrook heads to New York City where he’s nominated for a GRAMMY alongside Camelphat for their Top 20 smash ‘Cola’.
“My manager suggested [the collaboration] because he’s a big Camelphat fan. I didn’t really think anything was gonna come of it at the time to be honest. I love the song but I didn’t see it crossing over into mainstream radio or anything like that, so it’s been amazing to see it grow.”
We can't wait to see what 2018's got in store!
